Hi everyone,
It's that time again! The next BCASW MARC meeting will be on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 from 5:30 until 7:30.
Once again, we will be meeting at MOSAIC (1720 Grant St., 2nd floor). Thank you to Sherman Chan for continuing to make this possible.
For this meeting, we have invited Alex Sangha to discuss two dynamic initiatives that he has developed. The first is Sher Vancouver (http://www.shervancouver.com/), which is a social and support organization for LGBT members of the South Asian community as well as friends, families and allies.
The second initiative is Q Karma, an intercultural queer Facebook group that was recently launched to facilitate more cross-cultural interaction within LGBT communities. Alex will also discuss other community resources that may be of interest to social workers.
We will definitely have time for questions and discussion. Time permitting, we may also turn our attention to other agenda items (e.g., Terms of Reference, BCASW update).

Subject: Beautiful Minds Radio Updates!
Dear Beautiful Minds Radio Fan,
October is when we get to have fun at Halloween, where we get to pretend to scare and be scared. Beautiful Minds looks at one of the things that scares a lot of people for real -- the mentally ill being violent -- and why this is one more superstition that needs to hit the trash can.
This Monday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. we'll feature a caregiver's views of his nephew: a young man with schizophrenia, and his potential for violence or lack thereof. We'll also have an interview with Professor Stephen Hart of SFU, who contrasts the public perception of the link between mental illness and violence with the reality.
Recently the Vancouver Police publicly expressed their frustration over the lack of support in the system for the mentally ill. Next Monday, Oct. 17, we'll feature a Vancouver police officer with Car 87, where a police officer and a nurse are partnered to give assistance to those with psychiatric problems. We'll also have a guest from the Pivot Legal Society.
On both programs, Dr. Chris Gorman and Brendan Beiser will provide commentary.
